Universal Negro Improvement Association

Categories: Race Issues

Countries: Jamaica

Founded by Marcus Garvey in Jamaica. It campaigned against lynching, denial of black voting rights and racial discrimination. It aimed to 'clear out' white people from Africa (maybe back in 1914 this contradiction wasn't so apparent as it is now). According to its 1929 constitution it is a 'social, friendly, humanitarian, charitable, educational, institutional, constructive and expansive society, and is founded by persons desiring to do the utmost to work for the general uplift of the people of African ancestry of the world'.
